Challenge
Warehouses offer significant value to businesses but are also environments with ongoing risks and hazards to workers— the need to spot oncoming vehicles, pedestrians, and slippery floors is essential to preventing injuries and accidents.
Our customer, a Regina-based electrical contractor specializing in industrial controls, partnered with EECOL to address a critical lighting issue for their client, a sizeable manufacturer of packaging. This manufacturer faced the risk of a shutdown after an audit by their Occupational Health & Safety division mandated a lighting upgrade. The aged state of the warehouse’s lighting was so poor that it became a risk to the safety of teams who are critical to business success.

Solution
EECOL’s lighting specialist and the contractor visited the site to review the current lighting layout. While touring the site, the EECOL lighting specialist spotted several opportunities. The existing fixtures were all 8ft HO fluorescents, with 90% still running but providing no light output, thus consuming energy without benefit.
EECOL used specialized software to create several layouts with fixture options to meet the required light levels of 500 lux, additionally, an energy audit was conducted to review potential energy savings. EECOL recommended UHBS 24/36 LED high bays with occupancy sensors to optimize energy use.

Results
Initially, the manufacturer rejected the sensor-equipped fixtures due to their higher upfront cost. However, EECOL’s lighting specialist conducted a payback analysis for the contractor that highlighted the significant energy savings. The existing aisle lights were on 24/7 unnecessarily, costing $30,497 annually. Seeing the bigger picture, the manufacturer approved the senor-equipped proposal.
After installing the sensors, annual energy costs dropped to $4,196, allowing the new equipment to pay for itself in six months, with post-payback savings exceeding $26,000 each year.
